Shooting Video with an iPhone

Our friends at Wistia have produced this rather excellent video explaining how to shoot video with an iphone and make the most of the results. If you’re planning on making a video with your own device and want to get the best results, follow these tips:

Tips for using an iPhone video camera

The iPhone has an amazing video camera, but just clicking record may not produce as high a quality of video footage that you’d like.
Using a tripod and planning for lighting and audio can make a huge difference. Here are some tips for shooting better-looking video using an iPhone.
We highly recommend Wistia as one of the options you can use for your video marketing – we’ll talk about it in a later blog in depth, but for the moment take a look at their video on shooting with an iPhone – we couldn’t have said it better ourselves so we won’t try .

Things to note when filming with an iPhone:

Use a tripod
Use lights or get the natural lighting right
Record separate audio and clapperboard it
Slo-mo feature is fabulous – for action shots only
Use a tripod to ensure you aren’t stretching the iphones capability to remedy your shaky hands! And don’t use zoom! Move the tripod closer or further away to get the shot you want
Use a lighting kit – plenty of recommendations in the video and you can  get some decent kits for between £70 and £300 here in the UK depending on what you’re trying to achieve.
Record your audio on a separate mic and link it to the timing of the camera audio so you can replace it in the edit.
Use the slo-mo when your story suggests it might be a good idea – action shots work well, non-action shots don’t!
